3 Movie Soundtrack Analysis

Sweet Dreams by Emily Browning - Sucker Punch Soundtrack

  • Songwriter(s): Annie Lennox, David Stewart
  • Performed by: Emily Browning
  • Producer(s): Marius de Vries, Tyler Bates
  • Genre: Alternative/Cinematic/Atmospheric
In the open sequence of the film , when this song is used, it does a fantastic job at setting the mood. It added that eerie and suspenseful feeling. They would of been hard pressed to find a better fitting song than that. The faster, up beat parts are more stirring and aids in heightening the climatic scenes in the film.

Cherry Bomb by The Runaways - Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Songwriter(s): Kim Fowley, Joan Jett
  • Performed by: The Runaways
  • Genre: Alternative/Rock
This song is used for a montage scene in the movie when they're preparing to go to battle in the final scene. This song choice is effective as it is wild, crazy and funny, which aptly fits in with the mood of the scene and genre of the film. The fast pace and powerful beats allow for quick cut-away scenes in the montage.

The Hanging Tree by Jennifer Lawrence - Mockingjay Pt. 1
  • Songwriter(s): Suzanne Collins
  • Composer: Jeremiah Fraites, Wesley Schultz
  • Performed by: James Newton Howard, Jennifer Lawrence
  • Genre: Cinematic/Atmospheric
This song definitely adds an amazingly atmospheric feeling when it is used in the film. I for one got goosebumps and chills hearing it, as did everyone I saw it with, and that happened both times I went to see it! (Slightly obsessed). Without this song the scene would of suffered at trying to make that intensely strong emotional bond that it did. Also the song is simple and easy to sing along with, and get's quite 'chanty' towards the end. This allowed everyone in the audience who had read the book, and already knows the lyrics to sing along with it. adding another dimension to the cinematic experience.
