Stupid Girl Analysis

Stupid Girl Music Video Analysis

In this music video we see Pink speaking (or singing) up about the negative effects of how women are portrayed in the media. She conveys this with powerful lyrics such as ‘What happened to the dream of a girl president? She's dancin' in the video next to 50 Cent’ because the views of many girls is focused on that ‘pop star’ lifestyle, rather on hard work, determination and standing up for what’s right. Also, ‘Maybe if I act like that, that guy will call me back’ because many girls believe that to attract the guy of their dreams, they have to act a certain way, rather than themselves.

The imagery is also very powerful, for example this screenshot which shows a little girl with her good and bad alter egos on each shoulder, each one trying to persuade her to follow them.

There’s one character with trashy clothing, an excess amount of lip gloss, long shiny brown hair and huge shades. This character throughout the music video is seen doing the most stupid things, like hitting into people with her fancy sports car because she’s too busy being absorbed with herself to notice them. Most of the camera angles are from above making them seem small and and worthless. This character is obviously represented as a ‘stupid girl’ in the eyes of Pink.

One other ‘stupid girl’ character has blonde hair and is getting a fake spray-on tan which is far too orange and looks disgustingly fake on her.

As seen in the previous screenshot, there’s another girl dancing next to 50 Cent, wearing skimpy clothing and doing some promiscuous dancing. Conveying to the audience that she is a ‘stupid girl’.

Lastly we see a very raunchy cowgirl rubbing her body and gyrating over a muscle car. She’s wearing extremely short shorts and a bra. It is clear that her costume and the slow-motion, close ups and medium shots used, help to represent her as a complete and utter whore. We gather this from the scene showing her making a pornographic film too.

All in all, I think this music video was obviously made to show women, young girls in particular, that they can be so much more than what society deems a girl should be or how they should act. That they shouldn’t given in to the fake lifestyles that is so prolific in modern media today. They don’t have to alter the way they are so that they can fit in with people they think are their friends, or attract a future mate. Just being yourself is all you have to do to find happiness, and progress as a woman, a human being, and a society.
